Haldia Vigyan Parisad - at a glance

Haldia Vigyan Parisad was the year 1987 when people science movement has been emerging slowly in the State. With a view to spreading of scientific thoughts, making the society free from superstition, unveiling the new inventions of science among the common people, a new science Organization named Haldia Vigyan Parisad was established in Haldia, an Industrial city in the bank of river Hooghly. Various types of activities e.g. Science Fair, Science Exhibition, Environment Fair, Rationalistic programme, Popular Lecture were organized with a view to spreading science awareness at every corners of the society. Not only in the District Purba Medinipur, the activities and popularity of this Organization has got acknowledge of its activities in other neighboring districts.
But still there has been religious fundamentalism, unscientific ideas in the name of science, cheating by the so called astrologer, belief in custom of witch, faith in wearing amulet & horse-shoe etc. in corners of this society.
Awards Achieved

  • 1st ‘meghnad puraskar’ in the year 1993 by the govt. of west bengal for outstanding activity for popularization of science.
  • 5th ‘environment excellence award’ awarded by the west bengal cleaner production centre, a collaborative effort of indian chamber of commerce & west bengal pollution control board.

The 2024 World Environment Day Celebration took place on June 5 and June 15, accompanied by the Haldia environment tour and a talk on environmental issues. This fair concluded with various activities, including environmental discussions, Q&A sessions, slogans, recitations, dances, paintings, dramas, free sapling distribution, and prize distribution, and ended with an eco-friendly dinner. It was also announced that Forest Week will be celebrated in July 2024.

Project Accomplished

Migrant Labourers Project:(1999 - 2012)

It was a std/hiv/auds intervention-cum-sensitization program to reduce std and hiv infection among the migrant labourers at haldia through bcc strategy, condom promotion and std treatment. this project was run with technical & financial support from project management unit (pmu), dfid under west bengal sate aids prevention & control society (wbsap&cs) with the financial aid of national aids control organization (naco), india.

Healthy Highway Project (1997 – 2012)

Ongoing Projects

Webel Computer Training Centre

on 23 november 1993, the webel computer training centre, the pioneer of the computer training centre, was established in haldia. more than 7000 students have been trained at this centre and doing jobs in various institutions with reputations. now, the number of students in this centre is 95 nos. presently, courses like dsa, dfa, cca, and impact of webel informatics are being taught in this centre. training under skill development scheme is being imparted in this centre with the financial support of the employment exchange. we should take more steps to make it popular. presently, the following courses will be introduced in this centre soon: tutorial home / coaching centre for the students' up to class- x/h.s. passed students. spoken english course in collaboration with a famous educational institute.

Integrated Child Development Scheme, Nandigram- 2 (ICDS project )

integrated child development scheme, nandigram- 2 i.e. icds project, was started on 1st december 1999. the sphere of activity of this project under nandigram-2 block has been developing day by day and has created a special impression among the people by its generous service. in spite of many limitations, the staff of this project take part in various government programme other than regular project oriented job. 142 anganwari centres have been functioning under this project. 114383 people of nandigram- 2 block are getting service under this project. the children & pregnant mothers of the families belong to below the poverty line have been getting the following service from this project:

  • Awareness program about nutrition & health for the children below 6 yr. old
  • Awareness programme for the pregnant mothers
  • Vaccination program to the children to protect from infectious diseases
  • To provide pre-primary teaching
  • To conduct awareness program among self-help groups
  • To undertake program health, nutrition, and education for the age group 15 yr.- 18 yr.

 

Future Programme

In addition to regular activities, govt. project like integrated child development scheme (icds) is run by haldia vigyan parisad for the last 3 decades. we give below the names of some new projects which have already been either already been processed or we are interested to start in near future:

  1. Development of village economy with the help of council of advancement of people's action and rural technology (capart).
  2. Computer training centre for girls.
  3. Holding workshop for self-help groups.
  4. New projects with the help of the department of science & technology.
  5. Holding workshop for development of village artisans.
  6. Holding new project ‘swachh bharat mission’.
  7. Some more lists of programmes and activities which we feel to be taken over in future are being tabled here for discussion here:
    • To publish a book on the role of haldia vigyan parisad on science movement in undivided medinipur
    • To publish wall magazine & bulletin of haldia vigyan parisad in the name of ‘Bigyan O Samajchitra’ on regular basis
    • Holding nature observatory centre for students
    • Holding popular lecture on various subjects throughout the year
    • Postering on 5 topics in a year
    • Holding street meetings on contemporary issues, superstition, health etc.
    • Sky watching at night for the students
    • Observance of ‘days’ like world environment day, anti-war day, ‘van mahotsav', ‘wetland day’ etc.
    • Wbel computer centre - to introduce new courses, to develop standard of teach in and to encourage students about learning computers for 50% less fees with the help of employment exchange.
    • Holding model making workshop
    • Making calendar for whole year activities of our organization
    • To increase members of the organization up to 200
    • Searching new plot for making new building of our organization
    • Holding ‘jatha’ to popularize the science
    • Holding awareness programme about environment
    • To take steps for restoration of biodiversity in the industrial zone of haldia
    • Holding at least 5 seminars about proper use of water
    • Holding at least 12 seminars about superstition & astrology
    • Holding awareness programme against food adulteration & use of colour in food
    • Holding awareness programme about proper use of under-ground water
    • To publish pocket books about environment, power, food adulteration, safety etc. in the manner of questionnaire format
    • To publish ‘Vigyan O Samajchitra’ in new format
    • Holding ‘Students & Science Festival’.
